What I reviewed:

The Balance Plate
This is our most descriptive, informative, and motivational plate we offer. 100% melamine, dishwasher safe, 10" in diameter. These plates are custom made per order in the US, so please allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. Price includes shipping and handling in the continental US.

What I like:
-Neat concept.
-No calorie counting.
-Helps illustrate what a balanced meal should be.
One would be surprised how unbalanced a meal can really be!
-Creates easy way to keep portions in check.
-More likely to eat healthy when using this plate.
-Plate is dishwasher safe.

What dislike:
-Price for this plate seems too high ($19.99 for a plastic plate)
-Plate is not microwave safe.
-Made from 100% melamine. At first I didn't know what this was so I had to do some research on the FDA site. This is what I learned about the material.

What is melamine?
Melamine is a chemical that has many industrial uses.  In the United States, it is approved for use in the manufacturing of some cooking utensils, plates, plastic products, paper, paperboard, and industrial coatings, among other things. In addition, although it is not registered as a fertilizer in the U.S., melamine has been used as a fertilizer in some parts of the world.
Melamine may be used in the manufacturing of packaging for food products, but is not FDA-approved for direct addition to human food or animal feeds marketed in the U.S.

When highly acidic foods are heated to extreme temperatures (e.g.,160 ° F or higher), the amount of melamine that migrates out of the plastic can increase. Foods and drinks should not be heated on melamine-based dinnerware in microwave ovens.  Only ceramic or other cookware which specifies that the cookware is microwave-safe should be used. The food may then be served on melamine-based tableware.

What problems can melamine cause if people eat or drink food contaminated with it?

Products with melamine contamination above the levels noted in FDA’s risk assessment may put people at risk of conditions such as kidney stones and kidney failure, and of death. Signs of melamine poisoning may include irritability, blood in urine, little or no urine, signs of kidney infection, and / or high blood pressure.

While the use of melamine can be safe it still makes me feel uneasy using it. I really wish this plate was made of ceramic. Again, it's not completely unsafe..just has a potential to be unsafe.

Overall, this plate is a great concept. Using this plate can help you eat healthier, promote weight lose; however the material it's made of I'm not thrilled about.

  1. This plate is a great idea! I also wish it were ceramic. Thanks for the info on melamine, I do have some plates made of that and we will be sure not to use them in the microwave.

    1. Yes, I didn't really know what melamine exactly was, or the potential risks. I'm glad my research was useful to someone else as well!

Have a wonderful day Maryann! :)
