Having Fun and Helping Others

Monday, December 17, 2012

I just found this website and I wanted to share. It's a great and simple way to make a difference. Freerice.com is a cool site that asks you questions in several different topics (you choose). For every question you get right you donate 10 grains of rice to underprivileged areas in the world. If you sign up you can even track your total donated rice. This is a wonderful way to help others and it takes only a few minutes to do. I think this would also to a useful tool and have children use and to learn about helping others who are less fortunate. Check it out for yourself.

"Feeling guilty about wasting time on computer solitaire? Join the growing guilt-free multitude at FreeRice.com, an online game with redeeming social value."

"With Freerice, you can do good by having fun... to make a major difference for tens of thousands of hungry people..."

San Francisco Chronicle

An example of what I have earned are several year subscriptions to my favorite magazine such as Good Housekeeping, Cosmo, Glamour, and Redbook. It is very easy to earn points (first reward only took about 30 mins. to earn). The best part is I now I am knowledge about making greener purchases, along with reduces the resources I use.

DIY Personalize your Ornaments!

Wednesday, December 12, 2012
So today we finally got a Christmas tree and I have to say it's wonderful! There is nothing better than that smell a fresh tree brings into a home. One of the best parts of getting a tree is hanging all the ornaments up and thinking back on memories each object ignites. Recently we have been making our own ornaments from things we enjoy. It's great because it really personalizes the tree. One we made at our house tonight were some fishing lures. Fishing is a passion in our home and what better way to show that then to use a lure you actually use. This would also make a thoughtful gift! As a fun decoration that was made tonight was a liquor bottle. Check 'em out! What are some neat, personalized ornaments you have made?

Hope everyone is having a fun, stress free week :)

Keeping Crafty: DIY Scarf

Monday, December 3, 2012
Scarfs are one of my favorite accessories to wear, especially in the winter. There are so many different ways to wear them and it can jazz up any outfit. I decided why not create my very own scarf and so I did! :)  The best part is you get to completely customize it in length, color and size.

Make your own super cool scarf:

1. Go to a thrift store and buy a shirt. The best ones to use should be extra wide and long in length.
2. Cut across so the armpit and neck of the shirt is separate from the shirt bottom.
3. Cut shirt across in long stripes. Choose the if you want thick or thin strips (makes a difference with size of strands). Make sure to leave an inch + at the end! The shirt stripes should all still be connected at the end.
4. Pull the stripes to add more length.
5. Now you have a fancy, super cool accessory that's handmade by you!

The scarf that I created!

Happy crafting everyone!
